Today, we made E. coli cells competent and able to uptake DNA through the method involving CaCl₂. As well, we came up with several project ideas that we thought were feasible to attempt as a summer project. We narrowed the ideas down to:

• Bacteria producing vanilla-flavoured alcohol
• Bacteria that detected vanillin in food products
• Bacteria producing cheap hydrogen that could possibly power fuel cells
• Directed Evolution as a technique
