This site is dedicated to our advisors, who have helped us a lot during the entire project.
Ann Zahle Andersen
I am a post.doc at the microbiology group of the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at SDU. I have a past in systems biology and mathematical modeling, but am currently researching in the field of food microbiology.
I was introduced to the iGEM team in May and immediately saw great potential. Therefore I am truly honored to be an instructor on their project and look forward to lots of fun and good science over the summer.
Martin Hanczyc
This is my second year participating as an advisor for the SDU iGEM team. I am very pleased to see growing interest in the students who seek to educate themselves in this new field of synthetic biology. And their initiative in pursuing high-risk projects warms my heart. I am so pleased with the degree of success they have achieved due to their hard work, creativity and relentless determination. I think I have learned more from their example then they have learned from me. As an associate professor at SDU, I am primarily interested in developing laboratory models of complex systems that have life like properties. This is done through my participation in the research center called FLinT (fundamental living technology). Currently my research lies in physics and chemistry, but my interests are based in biology and evolution.
Jakob Møller-Jensen
Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark. I am interested in the molecular mechanisms by which pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli cause disease. In my group, we aim to identify bacterial virulence factors and further characterize the molecular cross-talk taking place at the host-pathogen interface during infection. In this framework the C. elegans model organism is used extensively for both genetic and proteomic analyses of bacterial infection. As a supporter throughout the summer I have become truly impressed by the SDU iGEM team enthusiasm and genuine interest in science. They really make things happen, both in the lab and outside!
Julian C. Shillcock
Associate Professor, Department of physics and chemistry, University of Southern Denmark. The aim of my research is to construct a computational model of a living cell that has predictive power for problems of biological interest on length and time scales of microns and milliseconds to seconds.
This includes biophysical processes such as:
Optimizing a drug delivery vehicle for delivering its payload to membrane-bound receptors
Signal transduction from the plasma membrane to the nucleus via motor-assisted transport vesicles
Pattern formation of receptors in the cell membrane
Sensitivity analysis of signalling networks in the presence of nanoparticles
Nanoparticles interacting with the plasma membrane
Engulfment of foreign objects into a cell
The techniques I use are particle-based simulation methods such as Dissipative Particle Dynamics, Brownian dynamics, Molecular Dynamics, and theoretical tools such as reaction-diffusion equations, non-linear differential equations.

Janni Vester Bjerrum
I am doing my master thesis with Jakob Møller-Jensen in the microbiology group of the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at SDU in Odense.
My research is focused on discovering sRNA’s from the pathogenic adherent-invasive E. coli involved in Crohn’s disease in order to identify the ones that are involved in bacterial virulence. I work with the nematode C. elegans as a modelorganism for the human gastrointestinal tract.
I was introduced to iGEM as the 2009 SDU team was my lab neighbour which I bitched and moaned about because they were jabbering, taking up all the lab space and “borrowing” my stuff without returning it. I guess I was asked to be part of the iGEM this year so that I could no longer bitch and moan but rather be responsible for the team's interplay with the other people in the lab. Jokes aside, I hope to bring knowledge and lab experience to the team and I am very excited about working with this very diverse group of people and look forward to all the science we are going to make and all the fun we are going to have, although there has been a serious lack of cake!
Mike Stein Barnkob
It's been fun to be an advisor for the 2010 SDU-Denmark iGEM team. I participated as a student in 2009, and am glad to have been able to help this years team.
When I am not busy being an inspirational force in the iGEM-lab, I spend time studying medicine, playing with [http://openwetware.org/wiki/Mike_Barnkob:Projects/Liquid_handling_robot LEGOs] and cure cancer.
Kir Jacobsen
I am presently working on my master thesis in biochemistry and molecular biology. My thesis is concerning methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and new possible treatments counteracting widespread antibiotic resistance.
I also participated in last year's iGEM competition on team SDU-Denmark. This year, I'm back as an instructor which has been exactly as much fun as being a student. I wish my team all the best during the competition.
Rafal Wieczorek
I'm a PhD student at SDU Department of Physics and Chemistry. I remember from my younger years when I was a master student in biotechnology taht I read about the iGEM competition and wishing to be a part of it. Unfortunately, at that time there was no team at my university. I see now that participating in the iGEM competition as an advisor is just as exciting as being an iGEM student.
