Trying to achieve the goal of our project, we would like to realize how wonderful synthetic biology is. It is attractive for us because synthetic biology is capable of unrestricted design and construction of a novel biological system by bottom-up approach starting from almost nothing, different from "genetic engineering" that is our major. We think it is essential to unify biotechnology with other research fields such as system engineering, mathematics and bioinformatics because the biological system is so complicated.

Welcome to our team wiki!
We are Tokyo-NoKoGen and come from Tokyo,Japan.
Our team members all belong to the Department of Biotechnology at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. Our team, Tokyo-Nokogen, is composed of 18 students, 5 instructors and two advisers.

Last year was our first iGEM participation; we started a little slow and we had a few problems.
Although we ended up with a bronze medal, it generated lots of excitement and interest within our team and within our school.
This year, Tokyo-Nokogen has 13 new members. We are determined to get a gold medal and fight as a finalist for the grand prize.

When our team thought a new project to get a gold medal, our team knew about oil sand sponsorship and we prepared a research proposal to try to get oil sand sponsorship.
In researching and preparing the proposal, our team became very interested in environmental contamination and energy problem, and we decided to pursue it regardless of whether we get the oil sand sponsorship or not.
Therefore, we aim to construct valuable elements recovery systems using Escherichia Coli to recover from bitumen. So our team designed the new project; Eco tanker, and we try to achieve the goal of our project.

We feel the whole iGEM experience is VERY good for students and we believe synthetic biology has become an important field.
So our team will certainly continue to generate great interest in synthetic biology and iGEM within our school.

We believe, in the immediate future, the technique of synthetic biology will be used for our life.
Therefore, we are involved in the development of synthetic biology through our iGEM project. Of course, we anticipate very much the meeting with exciting and interesting studies of other teams.
Let’s open up new possibility of synthetic biology!
