Beste TU Delft iGEM Team supporter,
De afgelopen maanden zijn voorbij gevlogen. Na een intensieve voorbereiding werken we met het hele team nu hard aan het verwezenlijken van ons project: BioBricks ontwikkelen voor de afbraak van olie. Via deze nieuwsbrief willen wij u een kleine blik in de keuken gunnen.
TU Delft iGEM Team in het Nieuws
Kort nadat we ons project bekend hadden gemaakt, werden we haast overspoeld door de media. Wat met kort berichtje in de TU Delta begon eindigde met een nieuwsitem in NOS Headlines. Op onze YouTube channel staat het filmpje met Engelse ondertiteling.
iGEM Spring Workshop in Parijs
Alle Europese teams reisden af naar Parijs voor een eerste ontmoeting. Gelukkig bleek dat wij al ruim op de hoogte waren van het meeste dat komt kijken bij deze competitie. Hiermee lijken we in elk geval al een eerste stap voor te hebben op de concurrentie.
Behalve serieuze zaken was er ook genoeg ruimte om kennis te maken met de andere teams en natuurlijk de Franse keuken. De onderwerpen die de andere teams gekozen hadden waren heel divers. Met teams die eenzelfde project doen proberen we een samenwerking aan te gaan.
De assemblage van onze “Genetic Machine”
We zijn inmiddels druk bezig om alle ontworpen stukken DNA tot expressie te brengen. Met nog maar 99 dagen te gaan tot de Jamboree gaat er geen dag voorbij zonder knippen, plakken, transformatie of PCR! Ook de assays voor de karakterisering van de genen beginnen vorm te krijgen. Deze worden alvast getest met onze positieve controle stam P. putida. Of het machientje ook echt gaat werken zoals we het bedacht hebben blijft nog even spannend!
Het wordt een mooie zomer!
In plaats van een tripje naar de zon werken wij met veel plezier de hele zomer door in het lab. Zonder uw ondersteuning was dat niet mogelijk geweest.

Dear TU Delft iGEM Team supporter,
The past few months have flown by; time for an update. After intensive preparation period we are now in the stage of realizing our project: the development of an E. coli chassis for the degradation of oil (hydrocarbons). This newsletter will give some insight into our recent activities concerning the TU Delft iGEM project.
TU Delft iGEM Team in the News
Shortly after we had announced our project, we were overwhelmed by attention from various media. What started with a short story in the TU Delta (a weekly magazine of the Delft Technical University), ended with a item on the Dutch nation news (NOS, TU Delft iGEM 2010 - NOS News – 16 juni 2010) and NOS radio.
iGEM Spring Workshop in Paris
From all European teams a number of delegates travelled to Paris for a first meet-up: the 2010 Europe Spring Workshop. We decided to make it into a team outing: almost the entire team was able to attend the workshops. Fortunately it turned out that we were already up-to-date on most things that have to be considered when competing in iGEM, giving us a head-start compared to the competition.
Next to serious business there was also enough room to meet the other teams, the organization, and the French kitchen. Other teams had very divers projects, and those with similar ideas give room for cooperation.

In the mean time were have been busy to express the DNA we designed. With only 99 days to go until the Jamboree, no day goes by without digestions, ligations, transformations agarose gels or PCRs. Even the assays and characterizations of genes are beginning to take shape, for example we will be using P.putida as a positive control. Whether our “little machine” will work as planned remains a surprise!
It’s going to be a great summer!
Instead of a trip to more sunny places we will be working in the lab during the summer to realize our project. Without your support this would not have been possible!
