** Taroko became a national park in 1986, including Hualien County, Nantou County and Taichung County. It is the second largest national park in Taiwan. Taroko is famous for its spectacular mountains and marble canyons. Cliffs and canyons stretch along Liwu River. Four million years ago, the island of Taiwan was formed by the collision of plates. After millions of years of wind erosion, the marble rocks were exposed and cut by Liwu River, creating impressive grand canyons. From Qingshui to Nanhu Peak, the drop height is 3,742 meters. Such special geography has also bred special flora and fauna in this area.

** Carp Lake is the largest inland lake in Hualien County. It earned its name because of the shape of mountains surrounding the lake. The highway that surrounds the lake is 4-kilometer long and will take the strollers an hour to walk along the lake. Tourists can enjoy various outdoor activities such as camping, picnic, or even paragliding soaring along the lake and the mountains. On a sunny day, you can also choose to paddle the boat or have a bike tour on the lake highway. You can also try the tasty raw and live shrimp. The night view of the lake is especially beautiful during April and June with the sprinkled moonlight sprinkled on the lake and numerous glittering fireflies. As you visit the lake during the night, please make sure to tone down your voice and reduce the lighting so that the fireflies may not be distracted.

Revision as of 09:37, 25 May 2010

Details:

  • Date: June, 26-27
  • Location: Main Building, TzuChi University, Hualien, Taiwan
  • Room: TBD
  • Sponsors

The Asia iGEM workshop is sponsored by Tzu Chi University.

    Who should attend?

Every team MUST send at least one instructor. In the past the workshops were targeted specifically towards the instructors. This year, however, students are highly encouraged to attend as well!

You only have to attend one of the three workshops, whichever one you choose, but you must attend at least one regardless of whether you are a returning iGEM team or not.

    Why attend the workshop?

iGEM is growing and changing. There will be a lot of changes in the coming years and the iGEM community needs to communicate, discuss, and be involved in figuring out what iGEM will look like in the future. Will it turn in to one large conference? What about regionals?

Having the Jamboree as the only event where we all get to meet up in person is not ideal. We are encouraging teams to attend the workshops so that they can be involved in the discussions of how iGEM is changing and what the future of iGEM will be.

Your Role in the Teachers Workshop

Each team will be given less than 5 minutes to speak about their team and their involvement in iGEM this year. We advise against presenting slides because of time - as we are getting larger we want to give everyone the opportunity to speak but appreciate that we aren't just inviting you to come listen to team backgrounds all day. Please think about and be prepared to speak informally about the following:

    • How did you hear about iGEM and why did you get involved?
    • What are your expectations and hopes for iGEM 2010?
    • What has happened at your school to get ready for iGEM 2010?
    • Please describe the team - the students, the instructors, and the facilities available.
    • How are you supporting your team financially?
    • What projects is your team considering so far? (optional)

Please do not plan to give a presentation of the team's project. That will happen at the Jamboree.
