Newcastle University is a major research-intensive university located in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England. It was established as a School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834 and became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne by an Act of Parliament in August 1963. The University has one of the largest EU research portfolios in the UK.

The Wellcome Trust was established in 1936 as an independent charity funding research to improve human and animal health. With an endowment of around £13 billion, it is the United Kingdom's largest non-governmental source of funds for biomedical research. The overall mission of the trust is "to foster and promote research with the aim of improving human and animal health", and in addition to funding biomedical research it supports the public understanding of science.

It is funded from the Government's Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). BBSRC's current budget is £470M. It supports a total of around 1600 scientists and 2000 research students in universities and institutes in the UK.
