When I was younger, I can’t remember when exactly, I spent a great deal of my time at home. I didn’t have any friends. At school, I was very often made fun of because I looked different than the other kids.
My dad would always come back home around four o’clock in the afternoon. He smelled like factory grease and was usually so tired that he passed out on the couch. But sometimes, whenever he was not too tired, we would fold paper planes together. We didn’t talk much and we still don’t. We would usually just sit together folding paper planes until dinner was ready. We came up with many different models in those days. All of them had unique shapes. All of them had unique properties. I was and still am intrigued by what a piece of paper can do when folded in a certain way.
I am a cell biologist with a focus on neuroscience. I was attracted to the interdisciplinary nature of iGem and also by the opportunity to do novel research in a fairly independent manner. In my opinion I bring: a general understanding of lab procedure; a try anything once attitude and an appreciation of malt whisky to the team.
I am hoping that this project will lead to me being more skilled and comfortable in the lab, it will also provide me with exposure to an area of science that would have been unavailable otherwise.
