Synthetic biology is a young field of research and development, and it is for this reason that there has been a lot of confusion about it. It's influence is also growing, and it is important that upcoming generation are informed and prepared to make decisions regarding its presence in science, industry, and society.

This project seeks to tackle this problem in an effective way. The University of Alberta recognizes that doing begets understanding. This is why we are proud to present Genomikon, a synthetic biology educational kit. While there are already some biology kits also aimed at high school students, Genomikon has a number of advanced features that will allow it to be both educational and challenging. With this kit, students will be able to construct plasmids based on their own understanding of the components. Students will be able to utilize coding and regulatory sequences of DNA in a way that is rational and efficient.

There were a number of considerations regarding how Genomikon should implemented. We've had to focus on three main areas: simplicity, efficiency, and accessibility. The kit needed to be easy-to-use. For this reason, Genomikon is highly modular and robust. The kit also needed to efficient- this recent generation of high schoolers have grown up in a world of facebooking and texting, and the kit needs to produce tangible results quickly. Finally, Genomikon needed to be accessible such that it could be implemented in as many classrooms as possible.
