Vitamin A in the form of retinal is a key molecule in photosensation in both bacteria, archaea and eukaryotic organisms. The retinal molecule is a polyene chromophore, that will change states when struck by protons in the processes of photoisomerisation. This conformational change is relayed through opsin proteins to activate different intracellular pathways such as phototacitic pathways in archaea. Rhodopsins can also generate proton gradients by using the varying energy levels of the retinal molecule in it's different states. Finaly A vitamins suchs as retinal or it's interconvertible metabolites such as retinol are essential nutrients for humans and many animals, and are involved in many physiological functions appart from vision, such as maintenaince of bone density and regulation of gene transcription. They cannot be synthesized ''de novo'', although they can be obtained through cleavege of carotenes in the same enzymatic process our new part introduces.
