Newcastle University is a major research-intensive university located in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England. It was established as a School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834 and became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne by an Act of Parliament in August 1963. The University has one of the largest EU research portfolios in the UK.
The Wellcome Trust was established in 1936 as an independent charity funding research to improve human and animal health. With an endowment of around £13 billion, it is the United Kingdom's largest non-governmental source of funds for biomedical research. The overall mission of the trust is "to foster and promote research with the aim of improving human and animal health", and in addition to funding biomedical research it supports the public understanding of science.

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is one of 7 Research Councils that work together as Research Councils UK (RCUK). It is funded from the Government's Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). BBSRC's current budget is £470M. It supports a total of around 1600 scientists and 2000 research students in universities and institutes in the UK.

The School of Civil engineering and Geosciences is one of the largest Schools in Newcastle University. Civil Engineering has been a specialism at Newcastle since 1945 offering some of the first university courses available. The School of Computing Science, Newcastle University. For those who don't know much about us, we are one of the oldest computer science departments in the UK - in 2008 we celebrated our 50th anniversary. We treat teaching and research with equal importance. We run a wide range of up-to-date undergraduate degree programmes, and advanced taught postgraduate degree programmes, as well as a thriving and active research community supporting MPhil and PhD students from all over the world. Our research groups have high international reputations, and address leading-edge research problems in a wide range of topics.
