We set out to create a kit that would revolutionize the biology classroom. We sought to inspire individuals to be creative and imagine the unlimited possibilities of synthetic biology. With the GENOMIKON kit, we have created something truly unique: an educational experience that allows students to design and actually assemble their own plasmid in an afternoon and transform bacteria in a day. Students will learn fundamentals of biotechnology, molecular and synthetic biology by actually doing it.

This tour briefly describes some of what we accomplished. We introduce the technology that allows our kit to function, the kit itself, and the kits supporting software. GENOMIKON facilitates learning synthetic biology by those who wish to know and doing synthetic biology by those who wish to do.

GENOMIKON

The 2010 Alberta iGEM team has created an educational toolkit that has the potential to revolutionize the high school biology classroom. The GENOMIKON kit applies the principles of our newly refined genomic assembly method, BioBytes 2.0 to allow students to both design and assemble a plasmid in one afternoon. It is accompanied by our comprehensive online learning resource, GENOMIKON.ca. Using the GENOMIKON kit and online lab manual, students will be able to learn the fundamentals of synthetic biology and apply them in unique, hands-on experiments.
