Rather than a boring old paper lab manual our team decided to try and take it one step further and created an online lab manual and plasmid design tool, you can find it at [http:www.genomikon.ca genomikon.ca.]

The online tool, has everything the student needs to get started, there are premade experiments, articles explaining various topics in biology, and an integrated glossary.

Once they feel they’ve got the hang of it they can dig right in using the online plasmid design tool to get started creating their own experiments.  When they save the plasmid it generates the protocol so they can started building it in the lab.  Then they can publish it making it public so that others can try it out as well.

The software we have created makes an excellent companion to the kit and we hope that it will empower students to go beyond the initial experiments we designed and start making and sharing their own plasmid designs!

Online Companion Software

Complimenting the physical GENOMIKON kit is an online software suite. Packaged together at GENOMIKON.ca is:

  • An electronic lab manual that guides users through experiments packaged with the kit, with the capacity for users to design their own experiments.
  • An in silico plasmid design tool, where users can piece together plasmids by simply dragging parts together, while the software automatically generates a protocol for constructing that same plasmid with the kit.
  • Informational materials including an encyclopedia and glossary of terms for molecular biology related topics.
  • An online student and DYIbio community, where users can share and collaborate on experiments, while teachers can monitor their students' activities and progress.
